Double Berwick success in Congress

Tuesday, 30 April 2019 by John Smithson

The "home side" made a clean sweep of the trophies at Sunday's Congress, held at Berwick Rugby Club's clubhouse, with Brian Thomas & George Martin winning the Pairs event and making up half of the second-placed Team in the evening session, and Sandy Moor, Garneth Ellis, Brian Griffiths, & Louis Moore winning the Team competition.  And Berwick players made an excellent showing overall, with 3 pairs and 3 full teams in their respective top tens - in the Pairs, Trish Frew & Jane Smithson came 5th and Reg Drysdale & Jean Mole 7th, while in the Teams in addition to Brian Thomas' and George Martin's second place Tony Houghton, Jill Connor, Margaret Patterson, & Kate Mole came equal 4th and Peter and Cathy Ross, Nicola Corbyn, & Christopher Smith were equal 7th.

Altogether 54 pairs took part and 26 teams, with Berwick players making up just under 40% of the total number of participants, and we were delighted that visiting players included Eddie McGeough the current President of the Scottish Bridge Union.  Thanks for an enjoyable and successful Congress must go to the Match Director Julia Palmer, all the competitors, our caterer Ruth Forrest, those who helped with the preparation and running of the event (and the clearing up afterwards!) and to the Rugby Club for their premises and hospitality.
